What is Investment Banking?
An investment bank is a special type of financial institution that works primarily in high finance by helping companies to access the capital markets (stock market and bond market, for instance) to raise money for expansion or other needs. For e.g. If ICICI Securities wanted to sell $2 billion worth of stocks and bonds to build new businesses or fund existing one then an investment bank would help it find buyers for the financial instruments and handle the paperwork, along with a team of lawyers and accountants.
Typical Investment Bank Activities
Raise equity capital (e.g., helping launch an IPO)
Raise debt capital (e.g., issuing bonds to help raise money )
Launching new complex financial products (e.g., such as Mortgage Based Securities , Credit default swaps, etc)
Sometimes, they engage in proprietary trading where teams of in-house money managers invests or trades the company's own money for its private account (e.g. an investment bank believes that equity market may rise so they can setup a proprietary trading desk to invest in scrips of equity instruments and related derivatives on their own account.
